Whether you are a beginner or seasoned veteran, having the right equipment is essential. This is especially the case when it comes to kickboxing, and even more so for the kickboxing women out there. Let’s face it ladies, limping out of the gym with battered and swollen feet isn’t going to help you fit into your finest going out shoes, so ensuring you wear the right footwear for kickboxing is a must.

Now I know what you’re thinking but, no, the runners you have in the back of your wardrobe will not do just fine. Why? Well, for the same reason you wouldn’t use a Ferrari to drive off road! They may be expensive and look good, but that’s not the job that they were designed to do. In every sport the requirements are different, and the equipment is designed differently to suit. What do you need to look for? What type of shoes are recommended for women in kickboxing?

What to Consider When Buying Kickboxing Shoes

Aesthetics and budget matter, but you would be well advised not to prioritise these factors over functionality. When choosing a shoe for kickboxing you should primarily consider the following components:

Size

Even the most perfect shoe is useless if it doesn’t fit. Not only will it be uncomfortable but you risk injury when you can’t move naturally in an ill-fitting shoe.

Weight

High volume repetition is very common in kickboxing training. Maintaining a clean technique and conserving your energy during a kicking drill is hard enough without you strapping bricks to your feet.

Traction

Kickboxing involves a lot of fast, explosive movements. The risk of your feet slipping out from under you is something you want to minimize with good technique, and a solid shoe grip.

Support

Many kick boxers wrap their ankles. This provides stability to the joints as well as provides a layer of protection to the skin which can become sensitive with repeated impact. Such protection can also be provided with specialized kickboxing footwear.

Durability

Being the last woman standing is the goal in kickboxing. If you are able to go the distance, make sure your shoes can keep up to. You don’t want to be throwing money at a new pair every pay day.

With all that said, let jump right into the best kickboxing shoes for women.

1- PUMA Women’s Tazon 6

This shoe features a synthetic leather upper and a thermoplastic polyurethane outsole providing excellent durability, stability, and grip. Further support is achieved with the inclusion of a mid foot saddle, while optimal comfort is covered by impact absorbing heel, and a breathable EcoOrthoLite sockliner.

The EcoOrthoLite sockliner is a highly advanced midsole that’ll help make your shoes:

  • Breathable (It’s 95 – 100% breathable, which prevents odor and keeps prevents your feet from sweating as much)
  • Washable (Ensures that you can keep the inside of your shoes clean)
  • Moisture Management (its open cell structure helps to move out moisture away from your feet, to keep your feet cool)

In review of this product the ‘odd’ feel of the shoes stabilizing features requiring some used to is worth mentioning, but don’t let this deter you as this feeling is what sets it apart from a more generic training shoe when considering kickboxing. It’s better to persevere with a new style of shoe and be safe, than go with what you know and roll your ankle.

ProsCons
LightweightMust break into (This is recommended for all your new shoes)
Includes EcoOrthoLite sockliner
Comfortable (padded collar)
Breathable – (perforated side panels)
Durable

2- STRONG by Zumba

This shoe is designed to be lightweight and comfortable with a mesh upper portion, compression molded EVA midsole for cushioning, and high rebound polyurethane insole.

What is EVA Midsole you ask? Its the part of the shoe that is sandwhiced between your foot and the outsole that’s designed to protect your feet from sharp objects and external pressures (such as kicking). But, why should you care about having an EVA midsole?

  • They’re lightweight
  • Cushions your feet
  • Stabilizes your feet
  • Easily rebounds – When you put pressure on your feet, the midsole absorbs the shock, and then bounces back to its original shape

The rubber sole offers great grip and the low-cut design allows for maximum mobility of the ankle joint. Check out the reviews on Amazon yourself and you won’t be shocked by how many people have mentioned ” comfortable and supportive” when describing these shoes. Perfect for Kickboxing.

ProsCons

3- PUMA Women’s Tazon 5

As with the ‘Tazon 6’ the synthetic leather upper and thermoplastic polyurethane outsole provide excellent durability, stability, and grip which may take some getting used to and time to break in. This is much needed in kickboxing as you must have stability and grip when landing after kicking your partners pads or the punching pads.

Perforated panels, cushioned foam midsole, high-rebound EcoOrthoLite sockliner, and padded tongue/collar combine to offer excellent breathability and comfort. Putting in countless hours of kickboxing will definitely break a sweat, making breathable shoes in kickboxing a must.

As with most well designed, supportive shoes this product has been reviewed to take some perseverance, but those who put in the work are rewarded.

4- Mooto Wings Korea Taekwondo Shoes

These shoes stand out from the rest because of how lightweight it is, yet it still has all of the essentials. The synthetic leather upper and rubber sole offer great durability and traction, while clever ‘back stay’ technology minimizes transformation of shape and offers support.

Avoiding a lace up closure ensures that lace knots are not a cause for concern when kicking pads. This shoes credibility is supported by a host of positive reviews from experienced martial artists so you can feel confident if this is your pick.

Why include Taekwondo shoes on this list? A lot of their shoes are designed with kickboxing priorities in mind. Intentional or not, its greatly beneficial for us. Here’s how it works for Kickboxing

  • Soft Leather: While its not advertised to be waterproof, most Taekwondo have water resistant or waterproofing coating to avoid making these shoes heavy, and focus on making them lightweight.
  • Lace up or Slip on: Taekwondo fighters slip on and take off their shoes frequently, which adds a lot of convenience to a kickboxer without sacrificing other important qualities (such as breathability and durability)

5- RYKA Women’s Influence Low-Top

This shoe is designed for comfort with a padded tongue and collar, Flex-Foil and Direct-Fuse support layers, Precise-Return bouncy insole and dual density foam midsole with high impact N-Gage EVA, while durability is not overlooked with a synthetic upper.

What is N-Gage EVA you ask? Is an exclusive feature by RYKA, which focuses on ensuring that the midsole returns to its original state after impact. For example, when warming up in kickboxing, its most likely that you’ll be doing your rope skipping. Every time you jump and land on the ground, the mid sole absorbs the shock and bounces back to its original position to ensure your foot does not feel the impact of the jump. Shock absorption ensures your feet don’t feel the impact of every jump which prevent knee and lower back pain.

The traction outsole provides good grip but RYKA have patented a ‘footprint design’ which lends itself very well to pivoting movements which is a very well received feature.

ProsCons
N-Gage EVA midosleNot enough colour options
Lightweight
Cross Training Shoes – Can be used for other sports other than kickboxing
Lace-up – Easy to put on & take off
Durable

6- RYKA Women’s Devotion XT

Another shoe heralded for its lightweight, comfortable, and supportive design. The textile and synthetic mix in the upper provides durability while maintaining ventilation.

With rubber in key traction points the outsole features pivot points and flex grooves for smooth rotational movements, while the interior direct attach support system protects the foot in lateral movements.

This shoe also features a Antimicrobial Ortholite footbed for cushioning and to promote healthy footcare.

What is the Antimicrobial Ortholite footbed you ask? It’s a patented polymer cross-linked in the OrthoLite shoe insole. This is important to kickboxers because you are definitely going to be sweating a lot in your workout (I sure hope you are at least), and this typically leads to a build up of fungus and bacteria. This results in bad odor and athletes foot (source). The Antimicrobial Ortholite footbed prevents the build up of bacteria and fungus and prevents conditions like athletes foot.

Care should be taken when lacing to ensure there is no discomfort from the knots when kicking.

ProsCons
Breathability No lace up feature
Antimicrobial Ortholite footbed
Flexible
lightweight

7- RYKA Womens Influence

These shoes are centred on comfort and support. Flex-foil and direct Fuse layers provide support while dual density foam midsole with high impact N-Gage EVA energy return provides shape retention and cushioning.

In addition the rubber outsole with footprint design and pivot points provide traction with sport-specific ease of movement.

8- Century Lightfoot

While constructed of long-lasting synthetic leather for durability, this shoe is specially designed to be lightweight, pliable, and specialized. Its rubber sole features pivot points to enhance sport-specific footwork, and the covered top closure means no lace knots to cause aggravation when kicking.

The lack of comfort specific design features seems may be off putting to some but with less bells and whistles comes lighter weight, and 5 stars in review of the “very comfortable” feel of this shoe makes it hard to overlook.
